Uganda-Kenya Team

The April team will visit areas of BOTH Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya! They will start their visit in Entebbe, Uganda, spending time working in Mukono and Buikwe villages. Team members will do child assessments and train locals to do the same. From there, we'll travel to Jinja and Budadiri, doing community and project visits in addition to more assessments. We'll end our tim in Uganda with a visit to Sipi Falls as we travel to Kisumu, Kenya by van. While working in Kisumu, the team will partner with a number of orphanages, schools and care homes in villages surrounding Kisumu to encourage and support the leaders, staff and children there. Tasks may include assessments, cooking, cleaning, teaching English or in-depth discussions with youth and women's groups.
Following their stay in Kisumu, the team will travel by van to spend time relaxing on safari and seeing the great Masai Mara Reserve, up close and personal. Time will be spent on debriefing the time in both Uganda and Kenya and preparing for the trip home.

They'll spend theif final day traveling to Nairobi before doing some quick souvenir shopping and heading to the airport for their flights home.

Deposits for the April 2012Uganda- Kenya team are due January 28, 2012. HURRY! Time is running out to sign up for this team!

Kenya Orphanage Team

Be part of our annual "Orphanage Team" in Kisumu, Kenya! This team will follow the same basic plan as the April team except their focus will be almost entirely on orphanages and caring for the children in them. All team members will be involved in observing and assisting project groups in the Kisumu area during the first two weeks of this trip. A safari is included, of course, as well as shopping time upon return to Nairobi (similar to the April team).

For those team members taking advantage of the trip extensions and staying for additional two-week increments, time will be spent assisting care home staff with daily tasks including cooking, cleaning, playing with children, tutoring kids in English and other skills, and spending some quality time with hosts and new friends.

Please see our Kenya blog notes for the June 2011 Extended Team for more insight into our extended team activities.

Deposits for the June 2012 Kenya Orphanage team are due no later than March 16, 2012 - sign up soon and get your planning started for this fantastic opportunity. Openings are limited!

Uganda Orphan Care Team

At the end of June, you will have a great opportunity to visit all over Uganda as our team travels to care for orphans from east to west, and north to south. Starting in Kampala, the team will travel north to the Gulu area, then east to Malindi, and finish up returning south and west through many VCI trained villages.
Teams will offer assessments for the registered children, and assessment training to community leaders and community members throughout our travels. We will visit project groups to offer encouragement and where appropriate, assistance in completing a project.

Safari time will be taken in Western Uganda at Murchison Falls where you'll be sure to see some of the most beautiful lands and many of the wild animals of East Africa.

Deposits for the June 2012 Uganda Orphan Care Team are due March 30, 2012 - sign up soon and secure your place on the team - openings are limited!

June Kenya Team Note:
The June Kenya team is limited to 8 team members. Should a larger number of team members sign up, VCI will either add
a second Kenya team traveling June 30 - July 14,
or transfer team members to the June 30 Uganda team.

Because this is our most popular time of year for travel, team members wanting to be on the June 16 departure should be prepared for either option mentioned here.

July 2011 Nigeria Team -
Small but Mighty!

The "Small but Mightly" July 2011 Nigeria team made a huge impact on the people they met (seen below with their host

The team visited the small village of Ukya'u in Western Nigeria, staying
in small mud huts and working with community members and their families. Below, team members Serrena Carlucci (left) and Chelsea Rozanski teach a
group of children to sing "Twinkle,
Twinkle Little Star" in English.

The village of Bwonpe has taken their OPOS training further than almost any other village in Village Care's system. They have initiated more income generating projects and enlisted more volunteers than many other places.
Below, the fruits of their labors - a brand new clinic open to the entire community, built with funds the community raised by itself as a result of the VCI training.

Other income generating projects include the VCI Shop in Bwonpe where
community members can buy grocery and other items at low cost. All proceeds from the shop go back to the Bwonpe Community Project Group's funds that help the locals serve the needy there.
